MDA and COVID-19

MDA and COVID-19

On March 17, 2020 a staff meeting was held at the Manitoba Dental Association to announce the MDA’s position on the arriving COVID-19 Pandemic. MDA President Dr. Marc Mollot attended via teleconference.

A decision was made to halt all “positive” messaging or “business as usual” messaging and communications from the MDA.

All TV spots (“Flossing”), digital network channels and organic/harvested social media channels were stopped.

The city essentially shuttered and monitoring digital and social channels we quickly realized these were becoming some of the most important and effective forms of communications during the pandemic.

We quickly pivoted to create important messaging regarding dentistry and COVID-19. Dental offices were shut down except for dental emergencies. Seven social media messages were created, centered on postponed non-essential and elective dentistry, dental emergencies, hand washing, brushing regularly, dental risks, sugary drinks, and sharing a smile.

Further, in late March new MDA :30 and :15 PSA TV spots were created themed “We’ll All Smile Again.” These spots also ran concurrently on the MDA’s Social media and digital
platforms. With many businesses canceling their TV spots, these :15 and :30 PSA spots gained substantial bonusing.

Later in 2020, the TV spots were awarded an international Summit award for Corona virus response marketing.
